The news today is not very good to the environment: Belo Monte resumes work after the end of occupation. The settlement of the Amazon is a new paradigm, for which people are not yet prepared. You may not want to settle a city in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, where everyone wants to have gasoline-powered cars. One of the main reasons why the native Indians who are not yet acculturated coexist with the jungle without destroying it, is that they do not need these things and neither use electrical light.

These were the headlines of recent weeks :
   1- OPG wants to maintain suspension of the works of Belo Monte
   2- Norte Energia says suspension of work Belo Monte will bring "negative consequences and unpredictable"
   3- After officials being held hostage, Northern Energy ceases to send technicians to villages.

After two days of negotiation, the Norte Energia, the company responsible for the plant, ensured that meet the guidelines of the claims presented, including the construction of schools and health facilities for Indians, as well as reform of the Indian House.In the claims of fishermen and locals, contained suggestions work and support of Northern Energy initiatives to repeal the Instruction of the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Water Resources (IBAMA), which prohibits the fishing of the river.Since the day 8, the construction works on the Site Pimental, one of the plant beds, were paralyzed because of the occupation. Nevertheless, the work schedule was maintained by the company.In a statement, Northern Energy said, on receiving guarantees of the company, the protesters decided to leave the site so that about 900 workers to resume activities starting today.The negotiation meetings were coordinated by prosecutors of the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI), Leandro Santos Guard, and the prosecutor Incra, Analice Uchoa Cavalcanti. The other saturday we went to play in a Bar on the beach, and after the gig, ace 3:30 am, before hitting the road back, we went to eat something at a nearby restaurant. We were just the four of our band at a table when entered Armandinho (his mother calls him Armando) with his team, half a dozen guys with faces of who was sleeping on the trip and woke up to snack on. He greeted everyone. Then a lot of people started to get up from their tables, girls who were accompanied at the tables stood up, and began to form a queue for autographs and take pictures, and the dude could not even eat properly, serving everyone with a smile. We were thinking that it must be boring to be famous, anywhere you go someone is watching you. Any anonymous outing that you wish to make, you will always have someone watching and telling: Look, there goes that guy, isn't he entering there? It must be very annoying.You lose your freedom.

The OSESP - Symphony Orchestra of São Paulo played at the Royal Albert Hall in London under the baton of conductor Marin Alsop, from New York, USA. My nephew Rodrigo plays cello in the orchestra. He was delighted with the place, the city, the people and the accommodations, they had one room for each member. I didn't know that the Royal Albert Hall was so big. Holds 6,000 spectators. When the screen was opened they were surprised to see so many people. He told my mother that looked like a soccer stadium for so many people. Here, the symphony orchestras do not usually have as many spectators in theaters rooms. I also saw on brazilian TV an interview with conductor Marin Alsop saying that if they had done two shows, had overbooked the two, such was the demand for tickets. In London they performed with the Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire. Also played works by Villa-Lobos of Brazil, Argentine composer Ginastera. After, they performed in Amsterdam. Belo Monte, the hydro-electric power plant: No world leading has questioned that at the meeting Rio + 20. Neither in the environmental conference, nor at any time, we have seen the greatest global leaderships, question about it.Thus, that is about to be done. This is the transcription of a latest article about the facts about this plant.

For the first time engineers and Indians smoked the peace pipe in the Xingu. After 23 years of skirmishes around the construction of the Belo Monte Dam, they signed an agreement on Wednesday, 1

Representatives from five ethnic groups living in the area of direct influence of what purports to be the second largest dam in the world (but the largest in Brazil) accepted the continuation of the works. In exchange, developers agreed to comply with what the environmental licensing has forced them to do, but now under the supervision of the Indians themselves!

They will also monitor one of the most feared effects of the damming of the Xingu River, near the city of Altamira, Pará State, now in its middle course: the lack of water downstream, where some tribes live. They would suffer from thirst and hunger by at least three months of the year when the drought is greater.

One of the environmental licensing commitments made by the consortium that won the public bidding of Belo Monte was to maintain a minimum flow of 700,000 liters of water per second. It is well above the level registered in the summers more rigorous, which is 400,000 liters. If registered flow below this level, the construction company Northern Energy may be penalized and even lose the concession - with or without supervision indigenous which is now formalized in two management committees.

All claims that the Indians proclaimed by occupying the construction site were answered after two days of intense negotiation. After signing the agreement, they withdrew from the local to whom returned the 2,500 workers who worked there. The consolidation of the agreement, which removes the main obstacle to the continuity of service will depend on the implementing of what has been defined.
The delay, in fact, will be minimal, almost imperceptible. And the orders of the Indians could not be achieved without much effort. Strictly speaking, a lot of noise and confusion for a little real effect. 
The monumental dam is being built simultaneously on five fronts. All working on dry land, which is a rarity in large projects in the Amazon, providing exceptional speed to work. There is no other similar development in the region.
On the site occupied by the Indians appear the main project of the two spillways, beside which is mounted a powerhouse supplement. The main powerhouse will be built after the second spillway, this non-motorized, 50 miles downstream in a straight line (140 kms by natural bed). It is a completely original design standards for the dams. Not all paid attention to this singularity.  
The project rejected outright by the same indigenous groups in 1989 has little to do with the current. He followed the same design of the Tucuruí hydroelectric dams and other large. Everything should focus on the area that the Indians occupied on June 21
In order to gain (or bypass) the national resistance to the hydroelectric development of the valley of the Xingu River, which flows through the territories of Mato Grosso and Para, one of the most beautiful and complex country, the government canceled five of the six dams planned inventory from the year 1970. They maintained Belo Monte .
Instead of one barrier became three. In the earliest stage is already under construction main spillway, which at first would not be motorized. In newer versions (which seem to have no end), he will receive eight bulb turbines.
They are very small: its capacity is more than 20 times smaller than the giant turbines of Francis, of whom 18 (not 20 as indicated penultimate version of the project) will be the main force.  
The bulb type turbines operate with little water and water with his head down (just a drop of 12 meters, 90 meters of conventional turbines). No need to water accumulation in a reservoir. They are - like they say the engineers - the stream of water, with low environmental impact.
The 233 megawatts that these eight machines will generate, from 2015, representing 40% of which produces one of the 18 turbines of the powerhouse another conventional. Altogether, these take into account the potential of 12,000 MW Belo Monte. Energy that will be transferred almost entirely to the south of Brazil. 
For local consumption this plant would not be necessary.
Before reaching this reservoir, the waters of the Xingu (which can achieve throughput of 19 million liters per second) will be diverted from its natural course. For 50 kilometers, they go down 90 meters through artificial channels of concrete, also now under construction, the greatest work of this kind worldwide.
An intricate network of canals lead the water to a reservoir created out of the river channel, which, through a new spillway will reach the water intake of the main powerhouse. Their machines require 10 million liters per second to be able to produce according to their capacity.
This will only be fully achieved in the rainiest months of the year, which will not be more than seven or eight. Therefore the energy firm that available throughout the year, drops to 4300 MW, well below what would be the average cost of 5500 MW. Still, designers of Belo Monte guarantee that it will be profitable and that it will provide 8% of national demand, through a matrix renewable and clean.
Responding to critics and adjusting to new patterns of demand, the Xingu hydroelectric complex represents, literally, what its title says. It is the work more complicated than ever conceived and realized in Brazil in the energy sector. In so many amendments and corrections, has acquired an entirely new profile, which can be seen as something monstrous (a Frankenstein hydroelectric) or exquisite, so as to see it.
Of course, this vast complexity in the approach of a river was not put on the negotiating table with the Indian leaders. But spreadsheets will be back to work in the tempo. In such a way that perhaps only with the fait accompli it will be possible  to  know for certain,  what  creature will emerge from the clipboards of the engineers.

Here at south is located the largest canyon of south America, dividing the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina(It's called Aparados da Serra). I heard a geologist talking on TV that the difference between these here and the canyons of north America, is that here the canyons were formed during the divisions of the continents, and its composition is from rocks but because of the weather, they also have a dense vegetation, greenery and water.

A mild autumn.

Often at lunchtime, we see a bit of art and outdoor theater in the center of POA. This was in front of City Hall. A block away from there, the boys were playing bluegrass. We are in a mild autumn weather, hoping to cool a little to put most fashionable clothes, instead of using just a T-shirt. The summer was long and very strong and we were tired of sweating all day in the city (since November). Summer is good if you do not need to work in the city and can pass the time on the beach. 
 Spring begins on September 23, summer begins on December 21, autumn begun on March 21 and winter will begin on June 21.
Preferences aside, we should take advantage of what each season has to offer.

We played with the Beatles Fan Club band in a Beatle week in  POA wearing  the coats of Sargent Peppers.
 I work downtown and in my break for lunch and spare time I always descend and take a walk. Last friday and today I came across Pedro Marini. They are playing every friday with a bluegrass band in the Rua dos Andradas street,(the main street in POA downtown). Pedrinho is son of Mitch Marini, who was also a bass player. We played together in some groups. Mitch died and Pedro inherit 2 electric basses, 2 big acoustic basses, 2 motorbikes and the aim to survive from music while living here. Mitch used to play electric bass in a band with me, and he also played classical music in the orchestra with my nephew Rodrigo(cello), the Porto Alegre Symphonic Orchestra (OSPA-Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre). One time we were interviewed by a local TV channel and he said on the air to the TV reporter that there were 3 great names in the history of music starting with the B letter: Brahms, Beethoven and Bach, and that he would add to that list the 4th name: The Beatles.

There were two groups in POA that played Beatles, but after that report on Z.H. newspaper, the two became one. At the time of this review, Paulo and me were with other drummer and guitarist in Tokeloko, and Mitch and Schneider(our former drummer) went to form the Swing band. After that we reunited again. They returned to Tokeloko. Later we were together with Mitch and Schneider in the Beatles Fan club band. 
We all quit this band, and now I'm playing in a band and we play a little bit of everything, but Beatles is at least 50% of our set list. I also keep on studying acoustic guitar.

The nice part of Rio- Travessia/crossing dos Fortes 2012 - boia 4 (Hotel Meridien). It was broadcasted live by the main TV open channel. There were 2500 competitors. Athletes with the blue bonnet and amateurs with the white bonnet.

It was at the beach of Copacabana. The start was at the lifeguard 6 point, near the military fort of Copacabana. That used to be my prefered place of the beach. Actually, when I was a kid, my father had a heart attack while we were there along with my family and then we stayed there for 3 months during his treatment and recovery. The good part of that event was that we (my brother, sister and me) used to go to the beach everyday, we also stayed there during the Carnival, he recovered very well and lived for more twenty years. The only thing we had to do to get to the beach was to cross the Atlantica avenue. My dad used to watch us from the balcony of the apartment while we were in the beach, in the water.   

30 dolphins stranding and incredibly all of them were saved: While somebody was filming they queep coming to the sand. A biologist said that they were probably chasing a school of fishes and lost their way. The ones that's been saved stay safe and sound waiting for the ones that hasn't been saved yet. That's a good example for people, or nations, whose people still kill that kind of animals.

This week Porto Alegre completed 240 years and some events were organized.

One of the celebrations was a show with singer Maria Rita, making a tribute to Elis Regina, singing exclusively her songs, who was her mother and was born here. The show was in a stage built at Guaiba's riverside. Althought Elis Regina died when she was 4 years old, and she has her own personality, it's incredible how she resembles her mother when she sings.

Gasometer=Gasometro tower:

In P.Alegre there is a big chimmey from an ald power down factory that they use today as a cultural center called: Usina do Gasometro. From time to time somebody decides to jump from the top of it . . . . .  with a parachute. In this video we see a brazilian couple that has done that from a lot of points in the Country.

The student Jon Potter, 21, left the United States in December 2011 and travels to Brazil to ride ever since. On Saturday morning, along with Brazilian girlfriend, Stephanie Bercht, 24, drew attention to the jump base jump from the tower of the Gasometer, in Porto Alegre.

Potter is a base jumper for about two years and looking for places to jump as referrals from friends. The sport is practiced with a special low-altitude parachute. The name comes from the acronym Base (Building, Antenna, Spam and Earth), in Portuguese building, antenna, bridge and land.

Jon is studying to be a commercial pilot in Pennsylvania, but decided to take extended vacations to travel. Asked if he thought the idea dangerous to venture in Brazil as a hitchhiker, said smilingly:

 - I like to trust people, if not we can trust each other, then the world becomes a sad place.

Still, he confessed that to stand alone on the roads, few cars stopped, but with Stephanie at the opening of the people was higher. He said also that many invited them to stay in their homes.

The U.S. shows a particular fondness for the whole of Brazil, but said he was delighted with the Capital Porto Alegre. He highlighted the beauty of the setting sun of Guaíba river and when looking for a hallmark of Rio Grande do Sul, said with a laugh:

  -Comi An X and it's really good!

Even a little embarrassed, Potter agreed to show some of their knowledge in the Portuguese language. With unmistakable American accent, but correct grammar, revealed that three years ago lived in Manaus, (state of Amazonas/Brasil), and worked for three months as an English teacher.

The pair should then turn to Uruguay next week in search of other places to jump. The holiday, Jon assured, end in May when he returns to North America to continue his studies.

Icon of a generation, actress Brigitte Bardot used to come to Buzios, a small town in the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro. She's  still admired and loved and it was built a statue for her. She also has done a good work fighting for the animals rights.

She condemned seal hunting in Canada during a visit to that country with Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.^[20] She sought to discuss the issue with Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, but her request for a meeting was reportedly denied.^{[citation needed]}

In August 2010, Bardot addressed a letter to the Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II of Denmark appealing for the sovereign to halt the killing of dolphins in the Faroe Islands. In the letter, Bardot describes the activity as a "macabre spectacle" that "is a shame for Denmark and the Faroe Islands ... After un bello disastro, absurd disaster,shipwreck in Italy, gauchos arrive safe at home.

There were 56 brazilians in that ship that sanked in Italy, 11 of them were from here, they arrived in Porto Alegre and went straight to enjoy a barbecue(churrasco). Barbecue is the traditional typical dish of the gauchos, and the best barbecue houses in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasilia and the other capitals of Brazil are settled and managed by people from Rio Grande do Sul, spreading their tradition to the rest of Brazil. Gauchos also own barbecue restaurants all over the world, and you'll find them managing barbecue restaurants (churrascarias) in U.S.A, Russia, Europe, China, every Continent.

A great part of the population from this city is on the beaches,  and many will remain there until March, when summer ends and the school vacations finish. Most of these people are families, people on vacations, housewives , grandparents, retired people and kids enjoying school holidays or those who get a temporary job on the coast. Those who are working in the city can enjoy the beach only on weekends. In the city is doing 25° Centigrades at 3:00 A.m, and 30°C at 6:00 P.m. Still we have some funny things to see here. In the rush hour, downtown, a man is doing funny things with a ball and I caught that scene on my smart phone. A ball...that's a good sugestion of a present for a kid, it's good for the health and is not a dangerous sport. Of course, it isn't good to play with a ball in the middle of the street, but you can also practice at home if you have a room for that, and you can also take your ball(s) everywhere you go.

This weekend, over 160.000 vehicles are leaving town heading for the coast. At certain moments around 60 cars per minute, and we are too. We'll play in two bars on the street between Capão Novo and Atlântida beaches, being around 10 km one of another. In the middle it is Capão da Canoa. We put the drums , bass & guitar in the car and there we go. The other band members are already there waiting for us.
We'll see the fire festival at the beach, hope it will be marvelous as all years.

SUMMER NEVER ENDS, IT JUST MOVES FROM WHERE IT'S HAPPENING!

Summer is arising here and every year our Christmas and Reveillon are under a hot weather. Porto Alegre has a big river, but on summer we only stay here if we have to work. If you like to catch some waves the deal is to stay at the Atlantic coast. Elis Regina - Madalena (Ivan Lins)

Elis Regina was born in Porto Alegre and started his career in a local TV program for children ( O Clube do guri- The kids club). She was a "gauchinha" from a working class "barrio". Her first recording was in Porto Alegre when she was sixteen, and then she went to the "center of Brazil"/ south east region, (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo). She have a daughter with pianist cesarcamargomariano that is also a singer, Maria Rita was 4 years old when Elis passed away, www.maria-rita.com/.

Dúvida e desinformação rondam o projeto de Belo Monte. Porém, algo é certo: a usina será construída, com ou sem topless de Maitê Proença.

Ringo Star first show in Brazil: He came from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and his first night in Brasil was in Porto Alegre. He played here on thursday, 11/10. He brought together a band of great musicians and nice persons. From here they went to São Paulo (12 and 13/11), then Rio de Janeiro(11/15), Belo Horizonte(11/16), Brasilia(11/18), and finishing his brazilian tour on sunday in Recife(11/20). Seeing each one of the Beatles individually we understand why the Beatles were so great. In 7 years (from 1963 to 1970), they did a revolution in contemporary music. Pearl Jam also played here the following day, 11/11, and Jean Luc Ponty 0n 11/22.

One year ago Paul McCartney played here, on 11/07/2010. He stayed at the Sheraton Hotel, http://www.sheraton-poa.com.br/ ,one block from a bar called Sgt.Peppers, http://www.peppers.com.br/site/ , where we play with a band sometimes. That bar have the same name of the Beatle's album.
We also played in this bar last year, one day before Paul McCartney's show here. We came to know later that the members of Paul McCartney band came to the bar one night after we had played there and they got onstage!  
This year we played at the Sgt.Pepper's pub on 11/09, one day before Ringo's show, that was 11/10.
We will play again at the Sgt.Peppers next 12/07/2011 and you're wellcome!      
The All Star band show was delicious & the band was:
Wally Palmar(The Romantics)guitar: "Talking in your sheets", "What I like about you" and more. 
Rick Derringer( The McCoys) guitar:"Hang on sloopy" and an incredible guitar solo.
Richard Page (MrMister), bass guitar, sang "Broken Wings" with Ringo Star and Greg Bisonette on the drums doing a tribal beat to that song that was fantastic.
Edgar Winter, keyboards, "Free Ride", "Frankenstein" & others.
Gary Wright, keyboards, sang "Dream Weaver" and more. Gary Wright played on some George Harrison solo first Lps. 
Greg Bisonette, recorded with David Lee Roth the great album "Eat them and smile" and many others, drums. 

Olê, olê, olê, olê, Ringo, Ringo! Ringo said that he like to hear that. He presented Edgar Winter: The "first man on earth in musical history" to put a strap on a keyboard and use it like a guitar!

Jean Luc Ponty:

Jean Luc Ponty played New Country when he returned for the bis at the final .During the show he played parts of the albums: "Imaginary Voyage", "Enigmatic Ocean" and "Cosmic Messenger".
